Real Time Caption
Realtime Caption is used primarily by people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to facilitate communication. Often the Deaf and Hard of Hearing use a sign language interpreter but Realtime Captioning is a request option for late-deafened individuals who do not use sign language as their mode of communication. Realtime Captioning is the simultaneous process through which spoken-word English becomes readable English. A Captionist uses the aid of computer software on their laptop typing all spoken communication in steno shorthand. The computer then reinterprets the Captionist's shorthand into readable English on a computer monitor, television screen, video, or overhead projector, or other type of audiovisual device. Because all communication is processed through the Captionist's computer in word processing format, disked transcripts are always available and ready for email transmission, incorporation into a database, or to simply print and mail or fax to requester.
