Introduction to the Structure of Language: ASL and English
February 25-26, 2012; Saturday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm; Sunday 8:30 am to 3:30 pm

This course can be accessible from several remote sites around the state of Washington. The sites are: Anacortes, Vancouver, Pasco, Spokane and Edmonds
In order for a site to be connected, there must be at least three people pre-registered at for the location, no later than two weeks prior to the class. Please indicate your preferred remote site by signing up for that class section on your registration form.
This course provides a brief overview of the linguistic structures of American Sign Language and English. Various structural units of ASL and English, including phonology (study of the smallest parts of language), morphology (how words or signs are built and added to the language), and syntax (the structure of phrases and clauses) will be compared. Sociolinguistic issues relevant to the American Deaf Community such as language change and language policy and planning will be discussed.
